I have recently been through a few training sessions and have come away with interesting feedback and information I would like to share with you Scrum enthusiasts.
If we are to go back to a fundamental element of Scrum and Agility as a whole, Trust is @ it’s heart. More specifically, Trust in people and their abilities to deliver a product. I found that there is a great lack of faith in people and a lot of people(wanting to become Scrum Masters) seem to want to adopt Scrum for reasons of shrouding their motives with a process that is becoming a must in Software development. Remember that Scrum demands Transparency and you will find that these very same people will complain that Scrum does not work and will use many excuses to explain failures and shortcomings. We find ourselves during class talking about how giving people the right environment and working hours that are sustainable will only instill in them a sense of responsability to motivate themselves to work in completing their goals/objectives. Additionally, it is also important to take away the responsability to solve their issues on their own as it is a great way to motivate people. Motiviation comes from what you contribute to or the sentiment of being useful by solving your own problems. Being a Scrum Master means to have such Faith, to push these people in that direction. Drive them to that motivation, enable them to solve their own problems. I found that some organizations have very little room for teams to work with and are more worried with having room to conduct ineffecient, unproductive meetings with people that contribute nothing to the development effort. So please remember that with change comes resistance and with that, you must have the patience to brave the storm. Organizational culture and strong habits rooted in alot of people will make it very difficult to move forward with all changes required by the adoption of Scrum. Start small. Have faith! 🙂
